RH McGregor Project Play Has Officially Launched & We Need Your Support!
Mar 23 – The RH McGregor Project Play team is happy to share that our campaign website is now live! There you can learn more about Project Play and find updates on the efforts to revitalize our school yard. The website launch also means that we have officially kicked off our fundraising efforts to raise between $100,000 to $200,000 by April 2024.

We have big dreams for our school yard. To help us achieve our vision, we’re implementing a multi-pronged fundraising strategy. This means we’re also reaching out to businesses (local and corporate) and applying for grants, and not just relying on donations from school families. We’re also extremely fortunate to be supported by this year’s Parent & School Council, who have already started us on our journey towards reaching our fundraising goal.

Here’s how you can support our initial Project Play efforts:

1. Make an individual donation to RH McGregor Project Play; our fundraising page features details on how contributors will be recognized. Donations are eligible for a tax receipt.

2. Connect us with businesses or individuals who may be interested in helping us realize our outdoor space dreams. And if you have your own business and want to support our initiative, chat with us!

3. See if your employer has any corporate matching gift programs that we may be eligible for!

4. Let us know about any community grants we could apply for.

5. Support our community-oriented fundraisers. Our first one — with Plantables.ca — is on now. You get to grow your gardens while giving back to our school.

6. Join the RH McGregor Project Play team — while our small and mighty team has already completed quite a bit, we need all the help we can get!

If you can help with any of the above, please email the team atrhmcgregorplayground@gmail.com

RH McGregor’s 100th Anniversary Celebrations
Mar 10 – In September 1922, our school doors first opened to welcome neighbourhood children. While the original building has been replaced, and the landscape and population has changed drastically in one century, local kids have continuously been welcomed each September into a caring environment where they continue learn and grow. We’re excited to share that we will be celebrating our 100th anniversary on Saturday, May 27, 2023, in the afternoon. You will have an opportunity to learn about the school’s past, reflect on this land’s history, connect with the broader school community, and spark thoughtful discussions as we chart our course into the future.

Calling all RH McGregor parents, staff, alumni, former staff, and community members! We have prepared a brief survey to collect your memories, artifacts and/or photos as well as to see if you’re interested in helping with the celebration! We ask that parents
and staff send this survey to anyone who may have a connection to RH (e.g., neighbours, family members).

We’re also looking for historians, curators, and archivists who are interested in helping us show off our collection of school publications, photos, and more dating back to the 1920s. If you can create an exhibition for display, please contact
100YearsofRH@gmail.com.

We Support Our Education Workers!
Nov 3 – On Wednesday, the PSC emailed Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce to share our support for our school’s education workers and encourage the government to sit down with them and negotiate to a fair contact that demonstrates just how vital these workers are to our school system. You can see the full letter here.

Share Your Thoughts: What would you and your family love to see in our school yard?
Nov 1- The RH McGregor schoolyard will be getting a makeover in the 2023/24 school year. One of the changes will be a new playground, and we also have the opportunity to add in some additional outdoor features at this time (e.g. outdoor classroom space). The TDSB will be supporting some of the new playground costs, but we will also be looking at setting up a fundraising campaign. For additional background on this project, please  view the posters that were shared at MakerFest.

While we are still in the early planning stages, we want to hear from you about what is important! We’ve created a short, anonymous survey for the RHM community to fill out. Please complete it by Friday, November 11.

At our next PSC meeting, scheduled for November 28, a proposal from the school yard revitalization committee will be presented in advance of our next meeting with the TDSB. This proposal will help inform next steps and fundraising approaches. If you have strong thoughts around the school yard revitalization, we encourage you to attend our November 28 PSC meeting.

MakerFest Update
Oct 28 – Last Saturday’s Halloween MakerFest was a roaring success. Over 400 kids participated in creating and crafting their way through over 24 different activities (as well as munching on some pizza and sweet treats). While the goal of this event was to foster our sense of community, we are pleased to announce that the event raised $7,000 that will be used to fund future PSC activities for our school.

An event of this scale and scope requires a lot of work and time. It would not have been possible without the help of many volunteers. We want to give a massive thank you to Halloween MakerFest Committee and the many parents who helped us pull off this event.

And of course, we need to thank our sponsors, Heather Allin, realtor with LTHome.ca, for funding the haunted house and providing gift bags for the bingo game winners, and Sobeys on the Danforth, for providing the pumpkins for the pumpkin auction.

Important Halloween MakerFest Info
Oct 18 – We have tons of important details for this Saturday’s MakerFest!

We Need Volunteers
Halloween MakerFest is happening this Saturday, October 22 from 11am-3pm at the school. But to pull it off, we need more volunteers; without more people, some activities will need to shut down early.

Specifically, we need people to help from 1pm-3pm. These volunteers will primarily assist with guiding activity sessions (no DIY experience is needed; you will be shown exactly what needs to be done). We also need volunteers who can help tear down the event, starting at 3pm.

If you’re able to help, please fill out this form or reach out to us at rhmcgregorfair@gmail.com

Want Pizza? Pre-Order It!
Crafting and creating can build up quite the appetite. Make sure your kids (and maybe you) are properly fuelled by pre-ordering pizza slices and other treats, including drinks, popcorn, and candy kabob.

By pre-ordering, you guarantee pizza for your child and help minimize your time in line. While we will have pizza on-site for purchase, we can’t promise that we’ll have enough for all walk-up sales.

All food pre-orders must be placed through MunchaLunch.com prior to 11:59pm on Wednesday, October 19, at 11:59pm.

New Pre-Registered Activity & Last Chance to Pre-Order Your Wristbands
We’re thrilled to let you know that we’ve added another amazing activity session: Creating a wearable form mask using real lasers! Presented by the Toronto Tool Library, this activity costs an additional $5, and spots are limited. To guarantee your child can attend this session, register for a time slot before Wednesday, October 19, at 11:59pm.

Wednesday night is also the cut-off time for wristband presales and pre-registration for the other space-limited activities.

Pre-ordered wristbands will be available for pickup from the office from 2:30pm-5:30pm on Friday, October 21.

You can also purchase wristbands at the office on Friday from 2:30pm-5:30pm, and on October 22, as well as sign up for any still available pre-registered activities.

Plan Your Day
With over two dozen activities available, your kids might want to come to MakerFest with a bit of a plan. Read the activity descriptions and see the event’s map here, as well as pick up a few tips for a successful MakersFest.

Contributing To The Bake Sale?
If you’re donating items to the bake sale, please make sure they are pre-portioned into sale-friendly sizes and free of any nuts (vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free items would also be appreciated). Items can be dropped off at the office on Friday, October 21, prior to 4:00pm, or reach out to Louise, our bake goods wrangler, at rhmcgregorfair@gmail.com

We hope to see you on October 22!

Finally, the PSC would like to welcome back a trio of returning volunteers: Jennie Weller as the Fundraising Lead, Betsy Varghese as the Volunteer Lead and Lindsay Kneteman as the Communications Lead.

That’s a Wrap on the 2021/2022 School Year!

On Thursday, June 30, we wrapped up another successful school year with a little year-end party that featured music, dancing kids and some sweet, frozen treats.

The RH McGregor PSC wishes all students, staff and their families a safe, happy and relaxing summer! See you back in class on Tuesday, September 6.

Updates on the Spring Fair & Our SockFootage.com Campaign

June 17 – A huge “thank you!” to our amazing community and it the support it gave to our recent fundraising efforts! In late May, we wrapped up our fundraising efforts with SockFootage.com. Thanks to our community’s generosity, we raised over $400 for Michael Garron Hospital. Additionally, SockFootage’s buy-a-pair-give-a-pair model resulted in 230 pairs of socks being donated to Woodgreen Community Services. Both Woodgreen and Michael Garron are very appreciative of our donations!

Three current students, and one future one, along with PSC Chair Maryn Madoff and SockFootage founder Marisa Sheff, present socks to Woodgreen Community Services.

Our June 11 Spring Fair was also a massive success, with the online auction raising over $5,000, surpassing our goal. This event was a big undertaking, and it couldn’t have been pulled off without the help of a few key people:

My name is Menzies Jardine, and I chaired this year’s RH Spring Fair. The last two years have been tough, especially for our kids, and it was amazing to see the entire community come together to create something memorable for our little ones. I am excited to announce that the fair raised just over $17,000, which allows the PSC to help fund special events in the classroom, musical instruments, technology, clubs, sensory rooms/activities and so much more.

The RH Fair is a huge community event, this year we had local vendors attend our vendor market; a huge outpouring of donated items from local businesses and families for our amazing auction and raffle; and RH parents, teachers, and local high school students volunteering at the fair. For an event like this to come together, it takes a dedicated team sacrificing a lot of time and effort. A huge THANKS to the 2021/22 RH Spring Fair Committee: Aaron den Boer; Amy Murakami; Betsy Varghese; Charlotte Barler; Janela Jovellano; Jennie Weller; Jessica Thom; Kate Ballweg; Kevin Cmelak; Kim Osler; Leslie Summers deLuca; Lindsay Kneteman; Louise Plunkett; Marian Matthews; Marvin Aguilar; Maryn Madoff; Michelle Picard Cousins and Sarah Silver.

And a very special thank you to Principal Kurita, Vice Principal Hestick, Gloria, and our custodian team of Jay and Rob, who were there every step of the way. Thank you for all your support!
Menzies

Extracurricular Sports & Teams Return to RH

June 1 – After a few quiet seasons, the sounds of healthy competition and physical activity are once again filling the air of the RH gym and fields!

There are several teams currently competing in the RH House league soccer games at lunch times. Each team is named after a Toronto sports team (Jays, Raptors, Argos, Leafs, Rock and Toronto FC) and the finals are drawing near!

Approximately two dozen athletes qualified to be part of the RH track and field team. Those athletes recently went up to East York Collegiate to practice on its track. They are preparing for their TDSB-wide competition at Birchmount Stadium on June 13.

And the newest activity now available at the school is ultimate frisbee, which may also have a tournament date coming up.

Educators and researchers know how important sport and physical activity is for students, and establishing these habits in elementary years is crucial.  In a 2016 report on Women in Sport, researchers said if a girl has not played sports by the time she turns 10, there is only a 10% chance that she will be physically active as an adult.

Participating in athletics has been known to improve the cognitive and memory functions of the brain, as well as help to develop discipline, perseverance and teamwork ability that can translate into better academic performance. For so many kids who struggled with having gym on a screen, the return of real gym curriculum as well as sports and teams is essential.

Parent Council would like to extend sincere gratitude to Ms. Proudfoot, Mr. McKay, Mr. Francis, Ms. Wilbiks, Ms. Bertrand, Ms. Duncan and Ms. Neveau for their roles in helping to bring back lunch time sports and teams.

TDSB Approach to Combatting Racism

March 8 – The TDSB has collected data on race, religion and ethnicity of students for many years. They have also collected data on what racism feels like and sounds like in TDSB schools. Based on all of this data, they are now promoting their Student Learning Strategy for Combatting Hate and Racism. This is a student-centred approach to creating respectful and culturally safe learning environments for all students. Obviously classroom instruction will be one of the major aspects of this strategy. From the earliest days, students will be encouraged to share their identity and learn about other identities’ in positive and affirming ways. The TDSB will also be engaging parents and caregivers in this work.

Fundraising Update

March 4 – RH parents, families and friends have really stepped up and shelled out again – all to support the students at our school! At the February meeting, PSC Treasurer Janela Jovellano announced that the Domino’s Family Pizza Nights, the TerraCotta Cookie-Dough Fundraiser and the CandyGram sales for Grade 5 graduation have brought in more than $5,600! This is phenomenal, especially during this time when many people are still feeling negative effects to their work, health or other aspects from this ongoing (seemingly never-ending) pandemic.

February Parent Council Meeting Update

March 1 – Thanks to all the parents who came out to the Parent Council meeting last night. Principal Kurita reported there was an increase in the number of COVID cases at the school that seem to be related to the long-weekend time period. As of today, Ontario is eliminating the need for vaccine passports and lifting all capacity restrictions. However, the TDSB has not announced any changes for schools or students. Look for more meeting information on the Meeting Minutes page.

SuperBowl Half Time Show

Feb 16 – If you are a Gen X parent (born between 1970-1980) it is likely you knew all the songs that were performed during the NFL SuperBowl HalfTime show on Sunday, February 13. Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent and Eminem all rose to fame during Gen X high school and university days. More importantly, some of the performers in the show, which is watched by more than 103 million people worldwide, made statements about racism in the NFL. The most obvious was Eminem, who took a knee at the end of his song. This was to pay tribute to former NFL star Colin Kaepernick, who took a knee during the American anthem to bring attention to police brutality in the States, and has never played in the NFL since. Get in the know about racism, Black excellence, privilege and Canadian Black heroes this Black History Month (or African Heritage Month as it is called by the TDSB) with lots of books from A Different Booklist | Black History Month 2022 (K-12) . These are all great to read with your kids!

New Fundraisers Launching in February 2022!

Jan 31 – Starting now, RH McGregor Parent Council has partnered with Terra Cotta Cookie Co. to be able to sell their frozen cookie dough and $5 of every sale goes to our school!

We have also arranged for RH Family Pizza Nights at home with Domino’s Pizza and $5 of every pizza special ordered will go to our school.

And the Grade 5 graduating class is also organizing the Candy Gram sales at RH for Valentine’s Day. All students from Grade 1 to 5 can send a Candy Gram to teachers, staff and friends in the school and the Grade 5’s will deliver them! CandyGrams will be on sale from February 7th to 11th for just $1 and all proceeds will go to the Grade 5 graduation ceremony and end of year activities!

Check out the Budget & Fundraising page for all the details!

Repurposing at RH – Turning unwanted objects into sensory items!

Jan 21 – RH McGregor is continuing to implement more and more features that help to calm the senses of students, staff and teachers. To recap, the school now has an improved sensory room and various decals on the floors that are known as sensory paths. In progress are changes to lighting fixtures to bring some calm into the front office, often a place where students are sent when they are having challenges in the classroom. Also in progress are brightly coloured decals in the stairwells, showing counting to 100, multiplication tables and more. Parent Council is asking all RH parents to take a look around their homes and garages (if you have) to see if you have any of these items that can be adapted for sensory learning opportunities. Click on the picture below for a larger version.

Helpful Info for Parents – Managing Screen Time and Social Media

Jan 21 – It seems even the little ones want to be on the iPad or the phone to watch something or play a game. By Grade 2 and 3, kids are already coding online and then it quickly moves to playing online video games and delving into social media by Grade 5. Parent council volunteers are looking into a couple of things we might be able to follow up on to provide advice and resources to RH parents who want more information on this. Until those details are confirmed, check out this information sheet full of various resources for parents to help us manage the challenges related to screen time.

Back to School – January 2022

Jan 16 – With the last-minute start of school delayed from January 3 to January 5, and then a return to Virtual Learning from January 5 to January 13, it certainly hasn’t been the start to the year that any of us wanted. For Monday, January 17, there are new guidelines, a new daily schedule, new restrictions and other changes to be aware of as parents make the decision to send their kids back to school OR keep students at home. Teachers have been told to post assignments onto the online platforms they are using so students can work on them (aka asynchronous learning), but this is not mandatory at this time.

Please be sure you are aware of the new screening tool from Toronto Public Health/Toronto District School Board.

Keep an eye on your e-mails for updates from Principal Kurita about changing procedures.

Have a Wonderful Break & See You in 2022!

Dec 20 – Parent Council Exec members, Maryn, Jennie, Janela and Anne want to send out a special wish for a very happy holiday break to all the parents who have worked with Council so far this year! Even in these challenging times, we are doing it! We are making the magic of parent engagement possible! And to all the parents and caregivers at RH, hope you all have an enjoyable and restful holiday break and a Happy New Year! Remember, school is scheduled to start back on January 3 but keep your eyes on your e-mails for any updates from Principal Kurita if timing changes.

Last Day of Class!

Dec 17 – Parent Council was hoping for an outdoor, distanced party with music, lawn inflatables in the yard and candy for kids after school on Friday, but with COVID19 and Omicron case numbers going up, we decided to postpone this. Our school has been extremely diligent with ongoing masking, distancing, cleaning, sanitizing by staff, teachers and students as well as the asymptomatic testing efforts by the parent volunteers. And we have been rewarded for this with only one case in the school (as of Friday December 17). Please continue with vaccinations, boosters, rapid-testing, masking and distancing over the holidays. Provincial restrictions have changed again – keep up to date on the Ontario government website.

Outdoor Lost & Found Extravaganza

Dec 10 – Parents Joanne, Menzies, Amy, Chris, Anne and more worked to set out tables, racks, bins and boxes in the “Kindie Alley” from 1:00-4:30 p.m. on December 10. They also had help from the evening caretaking shift to bring equipment back and forth from the school. Luckily the high-winds that were predicted did not swoop through, and there were a lot of parents and kids that came by to retrieve items lost from the last school year (2020-21). Anything not claimed was taken into community organization New Circles, which provides clothing for kids and families in need in our area (Thorncliffe). There were also clothes set out from September 2021 to now – hoodies, sweatshirts and jackets were lined up on two racks! Anything not claimed from this section has been returned to the lost and found area in the school. This is now in the hallway outside the gym, with dozens of hooks to hang up items.

Tables of Lost and Found clothes as far as the eye can see!

Parent Council Planning Outdoor Lost & Found Event

After school on Friday, December 10, look out for the racks, tables, bins and boxes set out in the “KIndie Alley” area of the RH playground on the west side of the school. There will be tons of clothing, water bottles, lunch bags and more items that have been lost from the 2020-2021 school year and from September 2021 until now. Sincere thanks to parent volunteer Joanne Penhale for spearheading this with Jason Theriault, our new Head Caretaker, and with Principal Kurita. Thanks in advance to all the other parents who are helping to lug out clothing and boxes and tables on Friday!! Pictures to come soon!

Recent Parent Questions – Asked & Answered!

Nov 29 – Thank you to the parents that have written into mcgregor.matters@gmail.com. Parent Council Exec Jennie Weller is glued to the in-box and responds quickly whenever she can. Questions about RH students being safe with social media platforms as well as continued funding for JeLis and RazKids are with the Principal/Vice-Principal. But parent council has been able to answer questions about the following:
washrooms – checked/cleaned every morning for supplies & condition and then again by the evening caretaking staff
school grounds check – Head Caretaker goes out extra early every Monday morning to complete a thorough walk-through and then does checks every other day as well.
extracurriculars – Teachers were surveyed on this question in mid-October and at this time there is no capacity. Parent Council will check again in January for in-person and/or virtual offerings.
additional classroom/outdoor learning supplies – Parent Council is working with one class who missed the initial call out for supplies.

New Sensory Path Brightening RH Hallways

Nov 29 – Several different hallways at RH now have new graphic decals permanently affixed to the floor. At first glance, these are beautiful images that engage kids and adults alike. But as you look closer, walking over the images and words, teachers and students can read the instructions they see. These can be reminders to move a certain way, stretch, breathe, jump and more. There is a lot of scientific research about how pathways like this can help us to regulate our body and brain. To focus on our bodies for just a few moments can help calm the nervous system and help kids to learn better. When all the paths are installed, there will be sections that focus on counting 1-10, learning left and right directions, the alphabet, pushing, jumping, squatting, bear crawl, prompts for deep breathing and helping co-ordination and balance. Sincere thanks to parent volunteer Rebecca Leslie (and her family) who made this happen AT NO COST to the school!

BEFORE & AFTER – Sensory Path focusing on numbers and movement.

Teacher Appreciation Event from Parent Council

Nov 29 – On behalf of all RH parents, the Parent Council presented a special coffee break to all RH teachers and staff on Monday, November 29. This was a token of appreciation to say thank you for all of their efforts for our kids since September. Teachers are focusing on ever-changing COVID safety protocols, increasing literacy skills lost during remote learning, incorporating new virtual ways for speakers & presentations and lots of outdoor time. THANK YOU!!! Also, it doesn’t hurt to have professional pastry chef, entrepreneur and author Sarah Bell (of Bobette & Belle on Queen Street East) as an RH parent. Thanks for this absolutely stunning tablescape and treats.

Table full of cookies and cupcakes; coffee and tea also provided.

New Fundraising for 2021-2022 – TDSB Approved “FlipGive”

November 2021 – Raise money for Parent Council while shopping for all the stuff you buy all the time! More info now on the Budget & Fundraising Page.

“McGregor Bay” Sensory Room Available Again

November 2021 – This special room, close to the school library and filled with items to soothe the senses, was closed due to the pandemic. But thanks to the hard work and dedication of parent volunteer Rebecca Leslie, and co-operation from Vice-Principal Rocky Signorile, this room is back and better than ever.

There is lots of scientific evidence that students who are frustrated, irritated or stressed out can feel a lot better if they have an opportunity to have their senses (touch, sight, sound) stimulated or soothed in a different way than being in a regular classroom. So “McGregor Bay”, given that name because of an overall theme of being close to water, now has lighted bubble tubes, a hammock chair, small hiding space (sheet cave), weighted stuffed animals, exercise balls, balance beam, mirror, ‘fidget toys’, stress balls, yoga mats, rugs, a stationary bike and more.

Right now, this room is primarily used by students with Resource teacher supports, but Parent Council is hoping some of these ideas can be put into all of the classrooms so that all students can have a small area or items to help them regulate their emotions. There are more exciting ideas for building “sensory” items for students and staff into different areas of the school so stay tuned!

New equipment & supplies for RH!

November 2021 – RH parents generously donated $4,400 back in September 2021 to go towards supplies and equipment to make the most of outdoor learning, for classes and for outside recess time. So far this money has purchased:

5 large whiteboards with easels
96 clip boards
60 small mats (to sit on grass or concrete)
120 small whiteboards

The Parent Council also budgeted for $600 on sports equipment, like balls, soccer balls, soccer nets and more. These items were ordered from the Leslie & Lakeshore location of Canadian Tire. When RH parent Katherine Keeling went to pick up the items, she was shocked to see more than $2,400 worth of sports and outdoor equipment being given to the school – an $1,800 donation from the store to our kids!

Huge thanks go out to Canadian Tire, Katherine for picking up and delivering all these items to the school and all the parents who donated so quickly!

Pumpkin Expo and Online Pumpkin Auction Completed

October 2021 – As soon as the sun came out on Wednesday, there were decorated pumpkins along the fences of RH’s back field. Absolutely beautiful, creative, funny and interesting creations were on display – representing the students at RH from JK to Grade 5, and the office, music and caretaking staff. The online auction had to be extended to 10:00p.m.; there were bids up to the last minute! Final count is $1,500+ was raised for the RH Parent Council! Turns out the top three highest-bid pumpkins were from Mr. Mazaheritaghizadeh’s Grade 4 class, Ms. Curran’s Kindergarten class and Ms. Donovan’s Grade 1-2 class. Winning bidders will have received the notice about payment and pick-up. All winners, please e-transfer money to mcgregor.matters@gmail.com or bring exact cash (please) when you pick up!  Thank you to everyone who came out to see the pumpkins and all who made bids.

Sincere, heartfelt thanks to RH parents: Kirsten Jordan, Joanne Penhale, Menzies Jardine, Melissa Likely, Krista Holmes, Amy Murakami and Anne Smith who put this together! Gratitude also goes to stores who donated to this event: Hillsview Farms (East York Farmers Market vendor), Broadview & Danforth Sobeys, Danforth & Main Sobeys, Rocca’s No Frills on Coxwell, Marche Adonis in Scarborough and Broadview & Danforth Loblaws.

RH PSC is thinking about the return to the classroom in September 2021

June 2021 – RH PSC takes a stand against proposed hybrid learning. Read the letter that Parent Council sent to the TDSB Chair on behalf of the parent community.
